Pet, Trail or Show?
The Bloodhound is well suited for any or all of these activities.
He must be a pet with frequent interaction with his family if nothing else
to be truly happy. Trailing is his main purpose in life and he excels at
it. Contact your breeder, a local kennel club, a Search and Rescue group
or an obedience instructor for information on how to get started in tracking
or trailing. Hard work and dedication are necessary to get you and your
hound ready for SAR work but if you have the time it is well worth it. If
you desire to show your hound in AKC sanctioned shows discuss this with
your breeder. This can be an expensive endeavor but also one where lasting
friendships are made. Obedience is not what Bloodhounds are known for but
they are capable of doing well with patience and kindness.

Still Interested?
If you're still sure a Bloodhound should share your life, make
certain you are prepared to give him what is necessary to make this an enjoyable
relationship for both of you. Talk to as many people as you can who own
Bloodhounds or who are familiar with them. Read everything you can find
on the breed. Choose your Veterinarian and build your fence before getting
your puppy or dog. Most important of all is that everyone in the family
must want this dog. Many have been returned to the breeder or turned in
to the Humane Society because a spouse didn't want the dog.
