2006 Annual Reunion

Each year as we gather in Central Arfdom to celebrate and visit with our former foster hounds, there are always tears of joy, and sadness.  This past year we had to say goodbye to several of our former foster affies, while continuing to support those in need.   In August 2006 we past our first milestone when we accepted Creamstix and Velvet into our program making them the 99th and 100th afghan hounds  we have been able to help on their journey to a forever home.   Sadly, this year we also said goodbye to Shadow, one of the first rescue puppies who were responsible for our beginnings.

The day dawned cold and wet, but we did not let the weather damped our spirits.   The AHRCO annual reunion is anticipated  by many as a momentous event, and each year much we are happy to see our friends from Michigan, Kentucky, W. Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and N. Carolina.   Volunteers were at the park early to prepare.   The shelter house came with  2 fireplaces that were well stocked with firewood and soon there were fires burning; a welcoming sign to those who had traveled many miles to share in the celebrations.

As always, a part of the celebration is to elect a new King and Queen to reign over Central Arfdom for the coming year.   With the feast of hotdogs, home cooked chili and potato soup and delicious deserts over, the competition began.   Although the rain had stopped hours earlier, we opted to hold the completion in the shelter house since it was so large and so very comfortable.  First the queenly candidates paraded around the ring while their road to rescue was narrated by Maureen from her stand on the raised hearth.  As the votes were caste, the kingly candidates entered the ring to await their turn in the spotlight.   With the voting complete, volunteers quickly counted votes.    And the winners are....

Queen Margaret Barninger of Girard, Ohio  with Lady Grace Louise Merion of Gahanna, Ohio accepting the role of Lady in waiting

and

King Judah Allison of Columbus, Ohio with  Lord Tiny Sikora of Cosss Ille, Michigan accepting the role of Lord Valiant
