The Stand for Examination:

The Stand for Examination.... exercise is very helpful when you need the puppy to stay perfectly still while you or someone else is working on him. (ie. a vet, groomer) Start your puppy in the sit position. Place the first 2 fingers of your right hand in the pup's collar. Gently nudge forward on the collar while commanding "STAND". As the puppy rises into the standing position, slip your left hand, (palm down) under the tummy. This is to help "STEADY" him while the vet or groomer does the exam. After some practice, try removing your left hand to see if the pup can hold the position on his own. Always release with "OK" before allowing the pup to move from the position and praise immediately. This is the cure for hard to-groom puppies. While you are steadying the pup, have someone else work on the grooming, very gently of course. Often the "Stand" is a 2 person effort.
