The Goal In an attempt to better understand the natural development of an Indian Ringneck (P. k. manillensis) chick, the parents were allowed to raise their young to weaning. Weights and other growth observations were taken on a daily basis at approximately the same time each day. Pictures were taken every other day so the development changes would be more apparent.
It was hoped that the daily handling (for weights and notes) and 5-10 minutes of socialization every other day (once the pins had developed) would allow the chicks to develop socially much the way they would if hand fed. The goal was to have offspring that had the skills and understanding to raise their own young and yet still be easily handled by their human care taker.
We will follow the first 60 days of physical development of one chick.
